Since installing the Ricochet Offroad Armor on the RZR we have ridden some pretty rough and rocky trails all over the midwest and down south. We have been on all types of terrain from mud to rocks to hard pack to rutted woods trails and rocky creek beds. The Ricochet Offroad Armor has soaked it all up with ease. During one particular high speed run on a rocky section of the Hatfield McCoy trail system I was almost afraid to look under the RZR when we stopped because we were really bashing the undercarriage with rocks! Amazingly there wasn’t a single dent or ding in theRicochet Offroad Armor, just some light scratches. I am confident in saying that the vast majority of RZR owners will never subject their machines to that level of abuse, so if Project RZR’sRicochet Offroad Armor could stand up to a flogging of that magnitude it should easily withstand just about anything you could throw at it!

After installing the Ricochet Offroad Armor the whole machine feels more solid, like it’s carved out of one solid piece of something instead of bolted together bits and pieces. That solid protected feeling gives you confidence to tackle obstacles that you might have avoided in the past. This added confidence can really translate into a more enjoyable experience out on the trail since the less you have to worry about the more fun you’ll have. Taking a shot at that rock ledge or creek bed run that you may have been scared to try with stock plastic skids can be a very rewarding endeavor and give you that real sense of accomplishment that you get from conquering a difficult section of trail.

One thing you notice immediately is just how much flexing the flimsy stock skids had been doing, every time you bottom out on a rock or tree root with the Ricochet Offroad Armor installed it feels like a solid rigid contact, the only time it felt that way with the OEM plastic skids was when a rock hit the skid right on a frame rail. The frame took a beating with the OEM skids, I have full confidence the frame will not take another hit with the Ricochet Offroad Armor on the job, this stuff is tough as nails! I have literally had all four wheels off the ground teetering on a large rock and the Ricochet’s didn’t even bend!

Another feature I really like with the Ricochet Offroad Armor is how tight the pieces fit together. The large center section and the rear main section fit together very well so they don’t leave any gaps for a pointy rock to hang you up, you just glide right over. The same thing can be said for rutted out mud holes, if I think I may get high centered in a mud hole I just hit it with a little speed and I usually skim right over the top. While on the subject of mud I will say that the skids will hold some mud but this is true of all skid plates, it’s just a necessary compromise that comes with this high level of protection. As long as you’re mindful to periodically give them a good cleaning, paying particular attention to the A-arm guards, you will have no worries. The Ricochet Offroad Armor does have some strategically placed slots to help with water and mud draining and it is very user friendly to remove and re-install should you find yourself in some particularly nasty mud.

I have performed a service with the Ricochet Offroad Armor installed and the drain access holes are ample and very accommodating, you can tell Ricochet really did their homework on fitment. I actually used the right rear A-arm guard to my advantage when changing the oil, the oil filter is located right above the right rear tire and the oil I dripped out of the filter ran right down the A-arm guard and I caught it in my drain pan! I’m sure Ricochet didn’t intend this to be a feature but it was a happy accident nonetheless, call it a bonus feature if you will.

I have a feeling that the Ricochet Offroad Armor may well outlast the RZR, I am sure it will provide relatively cheap and very justifiable insurance for the frame and CV boots for years to come! This is my third set of Ricochet skids, I had their full sets on my last two ATV’s and I can say from experience that Ricochet stands behind their products, and I think they can because they know they have a great quality product!
