A couple weeks ago Ron from Rage Customs approached me and asked if I would like a set of Rage Customs’ Nerf Bars to test out, after a lot of arm twisting, I let him send me a set. These are very cool, and they offer protection that the stock foot pegs just don’t offer. They are very well built with a lot of care in each one. The tubing is very heavy, welds are pretty, and they are mostly straight, (more on that later). I cant talk to the durability of the coating just yet but they moved around on the concrete floor and were just a lil scuffed, and wiped clean.

They come packaged in pairs (duh) with all the hardware you’ll need to mount em up. (and a sticker! Woo!!)

First thing you’ll need to do to install the Nerf bars is to strip off your floor boards. Its pretty easy to do and I forgot to take pics of it, but just pull the bolts around the edge of the floor board piece with a 10mm wrench and a hex key, and also the 4 bolts that attach them to the floor board pegs, again 10mm. I find this easier to do when the Grizz is sitting on all fours, but the rest of the install was done with it standing on its end. After the plastics are off, take a 17mm socket (probably with a long extension) and pull the four bolts from each side shown here:

Note that on the left side (drivers side) that there are two tabs holding on to a brake line. Pop these out by depressing the ears carefully, they are plastic and depending on the age and conditions your grizz they can get brittle.
You will notice these tabs are on both of the Rage Nerfs. this just makes it so you dont have a designated left and right, Just slap one on one side and one on the other.
Next just line up the holes and snap the clips in place. I had to adjust them a bit. Line the bolt holes up in the nerfs and put two of the bolts in LOOSELY. Here is where I hit a small snag, and when I say they are mostly straight. Once I had the rearward bolts in the front bolt holes didnt quite line up. They were not off by far, but it was enough to not let the remaining bolts in. (see pic on left) At first I was a bit nervous, but with a lil thinking, and a short ratchet strap I fixed the problem and trucked on. I simply put the strap around the A-Arm of the Grizz and the Nerf and gave it a couple of cranks, as shown in the right pic:
Once you have all the bolts in and threading properly cinch em down and immediatly you can see how beefy they are. Take a look at em compared to the stock floor board pegs:
Now that you have the Nerfs bolted on and secure. Comes the hardest part (its not really that hard, but none of this is), fitting the foot boards. There is a grid type pattern underneath the floor boards. and a few of these need to be trimmed out to accomidate the square tubing. A dremel tool with a barrel sander does the trick and leaves it nice and smooth. (Again, I got so caught up in the process I forgot to take pics) Here you can kind of see where the tubing runs;
This took a few test fits before I got it all done, and I was a little nervous about cutting up my plastics, but the little plastic I routed off was replaced with a LOT of heavy steel tubing. A fair trade if you ask me. Along with with the nerfs come 8 long bolts with nylock nuts and washers. These replace the bolts in the floor of the foot board. I put the head of the bolt toward the ground and the nut up in the foot well. I figure if I tear one up, it would be easier to replace this way. Of course if you get the Ricochet foot well skid you wouldnt have to worry about that. Here is a finished pic….
Overall, these things are great. They are sturdy as hell, and look great. I got to take a ride with them the other day and right away I could feel how solid these things are. Before there was a bit of flex in the foot boards, that is completely gone. I didn’t really get to test them out fully as I didn’t wreck that day , but if I do, or get into any ruff stuff I know these will keep my feet and my grizz in one piece. I’ll post a full review after I get more time riding with them. But for now I can tell ya, if you ride hard like I do, you need a set of these.
