The Can-Am Commander MAX 1000 side-by-side, with its comfortable, stadium-style seating for four grown adults, offers the most innovative and versatile rec-utility performance in the industry. The Commander MAX platform features a 29.5-inch (75 mm) longer wheelbase (compared to the two-seater) and unmatched comfort for the rear passengers. The MAX platform includes three packages: DPS,™ XT™ and LIMITED. New colors, like Mossy Oak Break-Up Country Camo, a new belt-monitoring mechanism and improved maintenance schedule are the key highlights for 2016.

PERFORMANCE

Rotax® 1000 V-Twin Engine

The 85-horsepower, liquid-cooled, single overhead cam Rotax 1000 V-twin features four valves per cylinder and is fed by a 54 mm Bosch throttle body and two VDO Siemens fuel injectors. The sophisticated electronic fuel injection system automatically keeps the engine’s performance at its peak, regardless of temperature or altitude.

NEW CVT transmission with Electronic Drive Belt Protection

The Continuously Variable Transmission offers engine braking as well as High, Low, Park, Neutral and Reverse. The integrated Electronic Drive Belt Protection monitors the CVT belt to determine its condition and alerting the driver when necessary. The integrated Electronic Drive Belt Protection offers belt-spotting protection for when a driver is in high gear, but should be in low gear. The vehicle will not move and a “LOW GEAR” message will appear on the gauge, alerting the driver. The system is currently available as optional function on other Can-Am side-by-side vehicles.

Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC™)

The maintenance-free, throttle-by-wire system teams with the 54 mm Bosch throttle body to produce smooth throttle delivery even if the driver’s foot is bouncing due to the terrain. The Commander MAX side-by-side has a selectable Sport mode, which offers a more linear throttle control for performance driving, and ECO mode for driving under other driving conditions and situations.

HANDLING

Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)

The Tri-Mode DPS system features three modes (MIN, MED and MAX) allowing riders to select the desired amount of steering assist for the terrain and conditions. All modes offer less assist at high speed and more assist at low speed.

Visco-Lok QE

All DPS-equipped models come with the Visco-Lok QE calibration giving an even quicker engagement of the front differential. Can lock up to 100 percent with no rev or speed limiter. This differential, unlike some competitor’s differentials, does not have a speed or rev limiter.

Torsional Trailing arms Independent (TTI™) rear suspension

The TTI rear suspension allows the wheels to move rearward as they move up and down, producing a smooth ride. The durable rear end features 10 inches of travel (25 cm) and the large diameter rear, five-way preload-adjustable gas shocks for reduced fading.

Double A-arms front suspension

The Double A-arm suspension is precise in all situations and terrain. The front end, which features 10 inches of travel (25 cm), has the large diameter front, five-way preload-adjustable gas shocks for overall durability and better fade resistance.

14-inch (35.6 cm) cast-aluminum wheels

The Commander 1000 MAX DPS is outfitted with durable, silver-colored cast-aluminum wheels, for a unique look.

27-inch (68.6 cm) Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires

Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires feature a rugged six-ply radial construction, yet are lightweight to cut down on unsprung weight. The non-directional tires absorb the terrain for a smooth ride and provide predictable cornering.

Disc brakes with hydraulic piston calipers

The Commander MAX vehicles use dual 220 mm ventilated disc brakes with hydraulic twin-piston calipers up front and 214 mm ventilated disc brakes with hydraulic single-piston calipers on the rear.

11-inch (27.9 cm) ground clearance

The Commander MAX side-by-side vehicle offers 11 inches (27.9 cm) of ground clearance for maximum performance for conquering challenging terrain.

RIDER-FOCUSED DESIGN

Dual-level™ cargo box

The Commander MAX features the industry’s first cargo box with two levels separated by a removable, watertight panel. It offers the possibility to have an upper and a lower bed with an independent, removable tailgate. The tilt-assist, dumping box has a 600-pound total capacity (400 pounds upper, 200 pounds lower).

Comfort seats with sit-in fore / aft driver adjustment

Full bolster seats, complete with lumbar and shoulder support, offer segment-leading comfort. Adjustable fore and aft without the need of tools, the seats are designed to allow easy entry and exit of the machine. The automotive-type driver’s seat offers 6.3 inches (16 cm) of total adjustment. And when you complete your day’s work, the front seats are removable and freestanding so you can stay comfortable even around the campfire.

Adjustable tilt steering

The steering wheel adjusts (a total range of 30.5 degrees) without the need of tools. The gauge pivots with the steering wheel for enhanced visibility.

1,928 cubic inches (31.6 L) cockpit storage

The Can-Am Commander side-by-side family offers almost 2,000 cubic inches of storage in three separate compartments. That’s 1,050 cubic inches of storage in the glove box, another 799 cubic inches of storage under the fully adjustable driver’s seat and more in the center console area.

2-inch diameter, high strength steel, ROPS and ROHVA-approved cage

The sturdy 2-inch, steel cage meets Roll-over Protective Structures (ROPS) industry standards. The Commander line of side-by-side vehicles is also compliant with the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) standards, offering side nets, side shoulder bars and cage.

Standard & performance D.E.S.S.™ keys

D.E.S.S. is the industry’s first standard anti-theft device. Electronic code in key must match code in ECM to start. The Commander MAX family comes with two different keys. One is standard key, which limits top speed to 43.5 mph (70 km/h). The second key is the performance key that has no limitation on speed or power.

240-W lighting system

The Can-Am Commander MAX family of side-by-side vehicles features exceptional lighting with 240 watts in high-beam mode. The automotive-style projectors run at 120 watts in low beam.

1,500-pound (680 kg) towing capacity

An impressive 1,500 pounds of towing capacity lets the Commander MAX side-by-side vehicle family tow heavy loads.

2-inch rear hitch receiver

A standard 2-inch hitch receiver allows a standard vehicle towing bar and ball for added convenience.

10-gallon (37.8 L) fuel tank

A large 10-gallon (38 L) fuel tank provides maximum range for work and recreation.

625-W magneto

The Commander MAX electrical system can dedicate up to 300 free watts to power accessories thanks to a large magneto.

Dynamic Passenger Comfort

Dynamic Passenger Comfort ergonomics mean offering optimal seating, viewing and comfort for rear seated passengers. The rear seats feature the same ergonomics as the front passenger seat, in terms of both lumbar and shoulder support as well and the overall seat design. The rear passenger area also includes a total of four handholds, easy-clip side nets and stress-free access. Raised 3.5 inches higher than the front seats, the rear passenger seating features stadium-style positioning for increased passengers visibility while moving down the trail. This design element not only improves the rear passenger’s sight lines, but also creates a more interactive environment.

Passenger handholds and grab bars

The Commander MAX line of side-by-side vehicles offers the same handhold setup for the front passenger as found in the two-seat Commander. The dual handhold design, which includes a grab bar and a left-hand grip bar, features ergonomically friendly bends and optional hand placement for supreme comfort and convenience. The rear passenger area also includes a total of four handholds for the rear passengers. There is a grip bar on the center console for each passenger as well as an additional grab bar near the cage.

Four cup holders

Cup holders, located in the center console, up front and in the passenger area, have rubber flaps for off-road use.

UPDATED Revised maintenance break-in

The break-in maintenance requirement is no longer necessary on the Commander MAX vehicle, saving consumers time and money in the long run. The break-in has been revised to one year (1,500 km / 932 miles).

Easy-to-use maintenance center

Easily accessible and out of the elements under the hood, a centralized maintenance area allows access to the air box, radiator and coolant overflow. Fuses and relays are also easily accessible.

UPDATED DPS color

The Commander MAX DPS 1000 model now is available in Viper Red.

The Can-Am Commander MAX XT 1000 expands upon the DPS unit by including factory-installed XT package components and two new colors for 2016.

Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)

The Tri-Mode DPS system features three modes (MIN, MED and MAX) allowing riders to select the desired amount of steering assist for the terrain and performance. All modes offer less assist at high speed and more assist at low speed.

27-inch (68.6 cm) Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires

Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires feature a rugged six-ply radial construction, yet are lightweight to cut down on unsprung weight. The non-directional tires are very capable climbing and clawing across tough terrain and also absorb varying surfaces for a smooth ride and provide predictable cornering.

4,500-pound (2,041 kg) WARN winch

A 4,500-pound WARN winch kit includes a roller fairlead. The winch is designed to handle heavy-duty loads at the work site and on the trail.

Heavy-duty front bumper

The Can-Am Commander MAX XT features a front bumper that is installed at the factory. The added protection gives peace of mind in rugged conditions.

Rugged bed rails

Bed rails installed on the Dual-Level cargo box give the XT a rugged look and add more tie-down points for cargo carrying.

Mudguards

Mudguards run on the wheel wells to complete the premium look of the Can-Am Commander MAX XT and give the driver and passenger further protection from the mud.

Analog / digital gauge package

The analog / digital gauge package includes state-of-the-art instrumentation. This includes an analog tachometer and speedometer combined with an advanced digital information center.

Custom steering wheel

A premium custom steering wheel is standard on the Commander MAX XT.

NEW XT color options

The Commander MAX XT 1000 vehicle comes in two new offerings: Mossy Oak Break-Up Country Camo, Matte Black & Octane Blue. It is also offered in Yellow and a dipped Brushed Aluminum finish.

The Commander MAX LIMITED is the most luxurious four-person side-by-side vehicle on the market. The luxurious Commander MAX LIMITED starts with the popular XT package, but adds its own special, factory-installed and package-specific components, like FOX shocks, GPS, roof and more. The Commander MAX LIMITED platform features a hearty Rotax 1000 V-Twin engine, 29.5-in. (75 mm) longer wheelbase and unmatched rear-passenger comfort. For 2016, the Commander MAX LIMITED 1000 comes in a new painted Cognac color option and also features a new, standard Electronic Drive Belt Protection.

FOX† 2.0 PODIUM RC2† Piggyback shocks

Large-diameter aluminum piggyback shocks built by FOX are fully adjustable with dual-speed compression, rebound and preload adjustment. Both front and rear shocks have 10-in. (25.4 cm) travel. With advanced high- and low-speed tuning available, one can dial in suspension performance to their preference. The large-diameter design and piggyback construction help dissipate heat for less fade and consistent damping.

Garmin GPS

A premium Garmin Montana® 650t touch-screen GPS offers a fully interactive program and a full-color screen to enhance any adventure.

Sound system with four speakers, iPod/iPhone connector and controls

A four-speaker sound system, which is compatible with most major portable music players (including the iPod), offers a USB port and an auxiliary input.

4,500-pound (2,041 kg) WARN winch

The LIMITED uses the same 4,500-pound WARN winch kit that is included in the XT package.

Rear net

The rear net, emblazed with the Can-Am logo, gives the Commander MAX LIMITED a sophisticated look and acts as an open-air cover for the rear of the cab.
